The inability of local, state and international actors to arrive at a viable
solution to the seemingly intractable problem of conflict and subsequent
ethnic division on the island of Cyprus is by now legendary. Over the last
few years, the promise of natural gas and oil reserves buried deep beneath
ground in the territorial waters around Cyprus has bred a measure of
optimism that a solution may be closer than ever before. This presentation
takes a selective look at how events have moved ordinary people to seek to
address or overcome the realities of division.
